Chapter Twelve

“YOU CAN TELL ME WHAT REESE SAYS ON THE WAY.” Moving with the powerful swiftness she remembered, he crossed the glade and caught her by the arm. She hung back.

“I’m going nowhere with you, Englishman.” But before she could protest further, he had lifted her into his arms. She struggled, but he held her easily against the hard wall of his chest. “Let me go!” she cried. “Put me down.”

“Do you want your loving husband to catch up to you?” That thought silenced her, and he began to run through the trees toward a horse tethered nearby. As he lifted her into the saddle, she glared at him.

“I’ve told you that I’ll go nowhere with you.”

The words were wrenched away by the wind as the horse plunged forward. She was thrown back against him, the curve of her back pressing against the solid muscles of his chest and belly. The impact left her shocked and dizzied, and when she tried to draw in oxygen, his remembered, vital scent seared her lungs.

“You act sorry that I stopped Reese from raping you.” He sounded angry. “Perhaps I should have let you be.”

She shivered involuntarily, and he sensed the horror of her life with the Welshman. If he’d had one more moment, that bastard—but it had been more important to get Gwenyth to safety. Instinctively his arm tightened around her.

She tried to pull free. “You’re as bad as he is.”

As she spoke they rode out of the woods and onto a broad, marshy meadowland that lay between two low, round hills. Robert momentarily slowed his mount, and in that split second Gwenyth began to slide from the saddle. Before she could touch ground, he had caught her by the waist and pulled her back. “What in hell do you think you’re doing?”

“I told you that I wouldn’t go anywhere with you.” Defiantly she turned to glare up at him. His face was inches from hers, and in the depths of his eyes she could see a raw, angry flame. “Can’t you just let me go?”

In spite of the danger of pursuit he halted his horse and studied her in the faint light. The loose tumble of her hair framed a face that seemed thinner. She was paler, and there were shadows under her eyes. Marriage had done this to her. His fingers itched for Huw ap Reese’s throat, and anger made his voice harsh. “Go where? You can’t go home to Eyri, and unless I’m mistaken, you’d scarcely want to return to Castle Reese.”

“It’s no concern of yours where I go.”

“If your fond husband’s men find you wandering nearby, they’ll know I’m near at hand, too,” he retorted. “You see why I can’t have you falling into his hands. I’ve a liking for life.”

“You mean you’ve got to finish bribing Welsh lords to betray the alliance,” she charged hotly and then added, “Let me go. I know this country, and Reese’s men won’t catch me. I can five in the mountains until they stop searching for me.
